Makeover Thrifted Frames and Mats
One of my favourite hobbies is thrifting. I always seem to find something at the thrift store, and I never feel guilty because it’s affordable and eco-friendly. Today I want to teach you how to makeover thrifted frames and mats.
How many times have you gone thrifting and seen stacks and stacks of old ugly frames and passed them by because they were ugly?
In the last year, I’ve given a lot of frames a makeover, and here is one of the many methods (and favourite methods) that I have come up with.
What You Will Need
- Gold Spray Paint – I used Mirror Effect
- Flat Black Paint
- Rub n’ Buff – European Gold
- Flat White Spray Paint for mats

The mirror effect spray paint is such a beautiful base and makes your frames look like they’re metal. This would work on any type of spray paint; wood, plastic, metal and resin.
I only did one coat and then I took my Rub n Buff in European Gold and rubbed it all over the frames with a makeup brush. Hey! Don’t knock it until you try it!
Something you might just throw away is the mats. But don’t throw away that hot pink mat – spray paint it! I use a flat white or off white and spray paint my mats and they look new and beautiful!

While your mats are drying, get a paintbrush, flat black paint and paper towel and dry brush your picture frames. Adding a little bit of black paint into the details on the frame will make them look antique.
How to do this: Dip your brush in the black paint slightly, dab it on your paper towel, so you are left with a dry-ish brush and brush on your picture frames.
