Painting With Old Barn Milk Paint – Vintage Mirror

May 29, 2018 1 Comment

Hey Friends! I’m super excited to share with you how easy Painting With Old Barn Milk Paint can be!

Today is going to be a quick one on the blog as I have a little someone staring at me with his big blue eyes.

I received a shipment of Old Barn Milk Paint a few weeks ago and I had to paint this vintage mirror. The key to using this milk paint ( If you want a really authentic chippy look ) is to finding a piece of furniture with a finish on it like varnish. How do you know if a piece has been varnished? It usually is glossy. I find these are the best pieces to work with as the paint cannot adhere to the surface as well. It always gives me the best chippy look. If wanting to see another project I did a few years ago with this exact brand of paint, click here.

So here is the gorgeous vintage mirror that I painted with Old Barn Milk Paint. I was actually watching a new version of this mirror on Amazon but I didn’t want to pay a billion dollars for it and then this one popped up on Craigslist – score. Love me a good find!

There are many different ways to mix the paint with different temperatures of water. I have always used luke warm water and once I mix it with a kitchen whisk, I let it sit for about ten minutes. You also want to use equal parts of water and milk paint. Milk paint comes in a powder formula.

Below is a photo of the consistency after it sat for ten minutes. Ignore the dark shots. This blog was photographed on a very gloomy day.

Once you let it sit for ten minutes you can get on painting. There’s no trick. But make sure you try to brush it in one direction, especially if you’re doing one coat. With this piece I did two coats as I wanted a more finished/thicker look.

Below is a picture of how it looked after one coat. I actually really like the look of it with one coat, but I thought if I ever sell this mirror ( because I have #Ilikechangesyndrome ), then the buyer might want a more finished look.

This coat took about 30 minutes to fully dry, but try not to leave it too long because the drier it gets, the more crackly the paint gets and it’s hard to paint over flaky paint!

Here’s how the mirror looks today. I like to let it fully breath for a full day without putting a varnish on it so it can get its full chippyness. Once dry, I slap on either a clear varnish or a clear wax!

And that’s how you can easily paint with Old Barn Milk Paint. Keep in mind, I’ve bought other brands that do not chip as nicely as this paint, if at all. Which has been super sad.
